Photography Evolutions

I bought my first high end camera (Nikon D700) in 2009 while living in Los Angeles.  I was self taught, but within a few months, I moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico — a photographer’s paradise.

But then brain cancer hit.

It’s very hard for me to look back at photos taken before cancer. So my portfolio begins here…

Evolution

It took several years after brain cancer for my health to fully return.  Then I could focus on relearning photography, my camera, techniques, and concepts.  All of which took about four years, including the need to move for better medical care in Boston.

I celebrated by upgrading to a Nikon D810.

This was the first image I captured with my Nikon D700 — after the four year break. Taken at Salem Willows, Salem, Massachusetts.

This image will never be for sale.

Evolution II

During the most traumatic time in my life, I found Nature to be the most soothing.  I would just grab my camera, and my service dog, Maui, and start driving into the parks, meadows, and beaches.

Once I had relearned how to use all of the gear again, I became more fascinated by color and contrast because color was the first element that I saw when I regained my sight after the tumor removal.

Then capturing colors and contrasts became my goal.  Colors set the tone and mood of the photograph, it’s more important than textures and patterns, and often lines.

Evolution III

Recently, I moved to Columbus, Ohio, to be near my daughter.  In addition, I bought a new Nikon Zfc because it’s so light, and I use it when traveling.

I also started an exploration into black and white photography.  Architecture lends itself nicely to black and white.

I’ve been examining darker themes as well and using a new technique that adds texture to an image.
